Individual Health

Individual health insurance can be more affordable than group health insurance in Colorado.  One reason for this is that individual plans are subject to fewer mandates than the group plans.  They typically have no coverage for maternity and very little if any coverage for mental health.  The other reason they can be less expensive is that they are medically underwritten.  Carriers can and do deny coverage due to preexisting condtions.  They can also "rate-up" policies or put exclusions on preexisting condtions.  The health care reform bill passed in March of 2010 addresses many of the problems in the individual market but most of the changes won't go into effect until 2014.  To learn more about reform, visit this helpful site from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
